The School of Materials Science and Engineering MSEat Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is nowadays at the forefront of materials education and research in China. It was established in 1953 as part of the Mechanical Engineering Department of Huazhong Institute of Technology (HIT), which was formed by a number of talents returned from overseas as well as transferred from nearby institutions of Wuhan University, Hunan University, Nanchang University, and Guangxi University, etc. It was renamed as “Mechanical Engineering Department II” in 1965. In 1994, Material Science and Technology department was founded, and was expanded into the School of Materials Science and Engineering in 1998. The name, “School of Materials Science and Engineering”, has been used since May 26, 2000 as a result of the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute.

Milestones

1.     During the early periods of HUST, five undergraduate major subjects (Machinery Manufacturing, Machine Tool & Instrument, Casting, Forging & Pressing, and Metal Material & Heat Treatment) were initially offered by the Mechanical Engineering Department.

2.     In 1965, Mechanical Engineering Department II was founded, offering undergraduate major subjects of Casting, Forging & Pressing, and Metallography & Heat Treatment.

3.     In 1973, Welding was added as a new undergraduate major.

4.     In 1981, graduate programs were established, including the master’s program of Material Science and Materials Processing Engineering, and the doctoral program of Material Science.

5.     In 1984, doctoral program of Materials Processing Engineering were established.

6.     In 1988, “Pressure Processing” became a National Key Discipline, and later became a National First-level Discipline authorized to award the doctoral degree in 1998

7.     In 1990, the master’s program of Materials Physics and Chemistry was established, and later in 1998, the doctoral program of Materials Physics and Chemistry was approved.

8.     In 1991, “State Key Laboratory of Plastic Forming Simulation and Die & Mould Technology” was founded, and it was renamed the “State Key Laboratory of Material Processing and Die & Mould Technology” in 2006.

9.    In 1998, “Productivity Promotion Center for Rapid Prototyping Manufacturing” was founded by the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

10.  In 1999, the original undergraduate major subjects were integrated into two: Material Science & Engineering, and Material Processing & Control Engineering.

11.  In 1999, postdoctoral research programs of Material Science and Engineering was established.

12.  In 2001, “Materials Processing Engineering” became a Second-class National Key Discipline.

13.  In 2001, two compound majors were offered: Material Science & Engineering-Computer Science & Technology, and Material Processing & Control Engineering-Computer Science & Technology.

14.  In 2002, undergraduate major subjects of Material Science & Engineering and Material Processing & Control Engineering were resumed.

15.  In 2002, master’s and doctoral programs of Nanoscience and Technology were established.

16.  In 2003, master’s and doctoral program of Digitized Material Forming were established.

17.  In 2004, “Hubei Engineering Research Center for Advanced Forming Technology and Equipment” was founded.

18.  In 2004, “Key Technology of Rapid Manufacturing” was awarded the Hubei Innovation Team.

19.  In 2006, “Birmingham-HUST Joint Laboratory for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing” was founded.

20.  In 2006, “The Development of Nano Cu/PE Intra Uterine Device (IUD)” was awarded the Hubei Innovation Team.

21.  In 2007, “Materials Processing Engineering” was awarded the Second-class National Key Disciplines the second time, and “Material Science” was awarded the Second-class National Key Discipline.

22.  In 2007, “Material Science and Engineering” was awarded the First-class National Key Discipline.

23.  In 2007, “Incubator for Innovative Talents in Materials” was approved by the Ministry of Education.

24.  In 2007, “Hubei Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Material Science and Engineering” was approved.

25.  In 2008, “Hubei Engineering Research Center for Advanced Forming Technology and Equipment” was founded.

26.  In 2008, “Key materials and system integration of mid-temperature tablet solid oxide fuel cell” was awarded the Hubei Innovation Team.

27.  In 2009, Electronic Packaging Technology was added as a new major.

28.  In 2010, “New Energy Materials and Devices” was selected to Innovative Research Team of Ministry of Education.

29.  In 2010, “Intelligent simulation of the forming process of key automotive components” was awarded the Hubei Innovation Team.

30.  In 2011, “Key Laboratory for Large-Format Battery Materials and System” was founded by the Ministry of Education.

31.  In 2011, Functional Materials was added as a new major.

32.  In 2012, “National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Material Science and Engineering” was approved.

33.  In 2012, three National Engineering Education Center for Practice was approved (HUST-Guangxi Yuchai National Engineering Education Center for Practice, HUST-Jiangsu Pacific National Engineering Education Center for Practice, and HUST-YTO National Engineering Education Center for Practice).

34.  In 2012, “Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Equipment” was selected to Innovative Research Team of Ministry of Education.

35.  In 2012, “Hubei Engineering Laboratory for Advanced Forming Technology and Equipment, Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission” was founded.
