The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is located on the main campus of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), which is nearby the East Lake and the Yujia Hill with a beautiful landscape of lush woods and green grasses. HUST is one of the top universities on the national "211" and "985" projects for higher education. The school of MSE constitutes a major effort of the university to achieve academic excellence at home and abroad.

Since its establishment in 1952, the School of MSE has gradually become a vibrant community for materials innovation and education. Today, cutting-edge research are performed by different research groups in almost all areas of materials science and engineering, and are usually supported by advanced research facilities including two national labs on campus (Wuhan National Laboratory for optoelectronics and Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center). Intensive educational programs in MSE at both undergraduate and graduate levels are also meticulously carried out by our faculty and staff members, dedicated to meeting the educational challenges of the 21st century.

Education at the School of MSE has established advantages in several major disciplines: “Materials Science and Engineering” is a first-class national key discipline, and “Materials Processing Engineering” and “Materials Science” are second-class national key disciplines. Undergraduate degree programs are offered in 4 major subjects: Materials Science and Engineering, Material Forming and Control Engineering, Electronic Packaging, and Functional Materials. In particular, the Material Forming and Control Engineering program is supported by the Ministry of Education as a “featured development program”, and has been consistantly ranked the highest in China. The School of MSE also offers graduate educational programs leading to master and doctoral degrees. It also offers postdoctoral research program in Materials Science and Engineering.

Research at the School of MSE has made domestic and international impact in several areas, including: Computer Simulation of Materials Processing, Rapid Prototyping, Mould CAD/CAE, Materials Laser Processing, Precision Molding Technology, Robot-assisted Materials Processing, Energy Materials, Carbon Materials, Nanomaterials, Optoelectronic Materials, Metallic Materials and Electronic Packaging.

The School of MSE consists of three departments: the Department of Materials Science & Technology (MST), the Department of Material Physics and Chemistry (MPC), and the Department of Materials Engineering & Computer Application (MECA). The Department of MECA also includes 4 research centers: Center for Digital Forming and Die & Mold Technology, Center for Precision Forming Technology, Center for Joining & Electronic Packaging, and Rapid Manufacturing Center.

The School of MSE operates several shared research laboratories and teaching centers, including: State Key Laboratory of Material Processing and Die & Mould Technology, Productivity Promotion Center for Rapid Prototyping Manufacturing of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Key Laboratory for Large-Format Battery Materials and System of the Ministry of Education, National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Materials Science & Engineering, and 3 National Engineering Education Center for Practice (HUST-Guangxi Yuchai National Engineering Education Center for Practice, HUST-Jiangsu Pacific National Engineering Education Center for Practice, and HUST-YTO National Engineering Education Center for Practice).
