Supported by the State Key Laboratory of Materials Processing and Die & Mould Technology, the Rapid Manufacturing Center (RMC) in HUST has been undertaking many research works and projects, including successive holding National Sci-tech Support Plan, National 863 Project, National Science and Technology Major Project, National Natural Science Foundation of China, EU Framework Program 7 and EU Horizon 2020 international collaboration projects and some ministry-province level projects. The RMC has more than 160 researchers at different research levels covering various research areas including material science, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, computer science, control science and engineering, optical engineering and related interdisciplinary. Prof. Shi Yusheng is the current head of the group, after Prof. Huang Shuhuai’s unfortunate passing in 2007.

Many awards have been granted in recognition of research achievements of the RMC including 5 national awards, more than 10 provincial first-class awards, 4 patent awards, more than 10 talent awards and 10 post-graduate thesis awards. The RMC members have been granted more than 190 patents, published more than 20 monographs and textbooks, and over 800 research papers, in which more than 500 papers have been indexed by Science Citation Index and Engineering Index databases. More than 80 PhD candidates and 400 master students have been successfully received their degrees and graduated from the RMC. Research achievements has been listed in the "Top 10 Breakthroughs of Scientific and Technology in China" and "The top 10 Chinese scientific achievements for 2011", and some projects were selected as "The top 10 Chinese scientific outcome deliveries in university for 2017" and The top 10 Hubei province scientific outcome deliveries in university for 2016".
