New Metallic Materials Center

Dec 16, 2021

The New Metallic Materials Center was established in July 2020, aiming to solve the key materials problems involved in national important needs such as national defense and military, aerospace, marine engineering, biomedical, environmental protection, etc.

The Center has undertaken more than 70 projects, including key projects of the National Defense Science and Technology Innovation Special Zone, and national key R&D program projects, etc., with accumulated research funds of hundreds of millions of dollars. Members of the Center have been awarded National Technical Invention Second Prize, Natural Science Second Prize of the Ministry of Education, and Hubei Provincial Technical Invention First Prize, etc. More than one hundred national invention patents have been awarded. We have published more than one thousand papers in important journals and academic conferences at home and abroad. The Center has established long-term academic exchanges and cooperation with famous research institutes at home and abroad, such as Stanford University, Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, IFW Institute in Germany, Tohoku University in Japan, etc., and it has established close cooperation with famous enterprises at home and abroad in research and application promotion, such as Huawei, TCL, CSIC, China Aerospace Science and Technology Group, etc. Many of the research results of the center are in the leading/advanced international ranks, and some of them have been successfully transferred and formed into large-scale production.

Our center has 20 full-time teachers, including 10 professors (including 2 academicians, 3 national high-level talent program), 9 associate professors/associate researchers, 1 lecturer, and more than two-thirds of teachers have overseas visiting (stay) experience. Relying on the State Key Laboratory of Material Processing and Die & Mould Technology and the Center for Advanced Material Preparation and Forming of HUST, the Center has built a world-class platform for metal material preparation, forming processing and performance characterization, including vacuum arc melting-suction casting/spray casting/delivered belt system, vacuum powder atomization device, supersonic flame spraying system, metal additive manufacturing system, metal coating system, friction and wear testing machine, electrochemical workstation, simulation of deep sea environment, and the system of metal coating. Electrochemical workstation, simulated deep-sea environment corrosion measurement system, precious metal catalytic evaluation system and other complete sets of equipment, providing a good scientific experimental research platform for the study of scientific and technological issues related to metal materials. The center is oriented to the frontier of the discipline and the major needs of the country and conducts innovative research on the fundamentals and applications of new metallic materials.

Main research directions:

1) Advanced manufacturing and forming of Titanium alloys. The main research is on the intelligent simulation and prediction of high-performance titanium alloy composition; special powder metallurgy preparation technology of high-performance titanium alloy.

2) Amorphous alloys and high entropy alloys for structural and functional applications, including alloy composition design, liquid structure control, advanced preparation technology development (high temperature rapid synthesis, 3D printing, supersonic spraying, etc.).

3) Metal catalysis and calculation. Taking precious metal alloys and precious metal-oxide composite systems as objects, theoretical calculations are combined with atomic-scale manufacturing to study the conformational relationships of metal-catalyzed materials, explore the catalytic intrinsic active sites, regulate the low-temperature activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions, and develop precious metal reduction methods that integrate precise design, interface regulation, and advanced manufacturing.

4) Metal energy-containing materials. For rockets, satellites and other national defense needs, through composition design and preparation technology innovation, research and development of high-energy metal energy-containing fuels, to solve the problem of reaction activity and storage stability.

5) Metal functional surface. Research on metal surface strengthening and functional modification technologies (including supersonic flame spraying, laser strengthening, etc.), anti-corrosion and wear-resistant amorphous coatings, nuclear irradiation-resistant coatings, wear-resistant coatings, superhydrophobic surface modification, etc.
